Busking Competition

Kids Writing Workshop

On Sunday 23rd of this year’s Ranelagh Arts Festival, we’ll be running a busking competition between 12pm and 2pm, at a number of locations around the streets of Ranelagh. The competition is open to all performers, any age, any skill, all welcome! And as it’s a competition there will be a panel of roving judges, looking to give one lucky act a top prize! So whether you’re a ceili group, a singer, a saxophone player or a poet, come along to the arts centre at 11.30 to be allocated your spot in the village.

Writing and Werewolf Workshop by Maura Byrne. Maura Byrne’s first book ‘Bridget in Werewolf Rehab’ has been described by Children’s Books Ireland as “as part Wimpy Kid/ part Scream Street; but then again, it is quite unlike others of its’ genre. There are underlying morals about acceptance, friendship and loyalty, but they take a firm backseat to the fun of the story. It is fast-paced and loaded with humour, adventure and a big ‘who-donewriting tips, Maura will teach you how werewolves eat, prey and live! Raid your Halloween box, dress like a werewolf and come!

Join some of our local historians for a cycling tour of some of the local cemeteries, that boast a wealth of historical interest. We will be visiting the Hugenot Cemetry in Baggot Street, Donnybrook cemetery and Mount Jerome, a talk will be given at each on the history of the graveyard.

A historical walk of the ranelagh area that
outlines the surprising fact that it could be said that Ranelagh was the cradle of the Easter Rising. From Pearse’s family home on Sallymount Ave to Cullenswood House which was the spiritual home of the celtic Revival, the walk includes houses and buildings that links nearly all the major figures, including Pearse Connolly, Plunket, McDonagh and Ceant to the area. The walk/talk is presented by James Connolly -Heron, great grandson of James Connolly. A respected community activist in Ranelagh for well over 30 years, Jim is now associated mainly for the sterling work he has done in preserving Moore St. and now also is the co-author with Jim Allen of a ‘musical’ ‘Seven Songs for Seven Signatories’ presently touring Ireland. This is a unique opportunity for anyone interested in the period. James will be assisted on this tour by Honor Ni Bralochain a noted local writer and historian and Arts festival stalwart over the years.Honour is also the great grand neice of Joseph Mary Plunkett.

Art Workshop: The Forest of Wishes, Provided by the Magic Turtles

Branch Weaving: This workshop consists in inviting people to weave coulourful threads of wool around branches. At the end of the weaving, the participants can hang a special object and/or a message on the woven branch. We will provide a selection of shells, stones, feathers and little gems from the natural world from which people can choose. Once the pieces are finished, the participant can either take it away or hung it to one or more trees around alternately we will find a way to hung the branches and create a colourful forest of wishes. Material needed: branches, wool, objects from the natural world.Drawing: The workshop consists in drawing a tree starting from the person’s arm and hand. People will be invited to place the arm, from the elbow down, on a piece of paper or fabric, and trace the profile of the arm, where the forearm is the trunk and the palm and the fingers are the beginning of the branches. From there, each one will develop a personal tree. Words can be added to the drawing.

Following on from the 1916 walking tour will be the Ranelagh launch of books on James Connolly by Lorcan Collins, Joseph Mary Plunkett by Honor Ni Bhraolachain and Michael Mallin by Brian Hughes. The three authors will give short talks on the topics of their individual books. A Q&A will follow.

Come along for an hour of Ranelagh Players will be celebrating their tenth anniversary next year and are seeking new members to perform and to work behind the scenes. There are many opportunities for those interested in being involved in assisting the production, be it on stage, backstage or at
front of the house. We always welcome new
members for cast and crew – no experience

Arabesque Evening

A night of middle eastern delights with exquisite dance and sensual art from Aliyah and the bellydancers, Fadi and Kifah Hatoum will be performing classic Arabic music and songs, Rhythm rebelled will be performing a fusion of African and Arab Cuban drums. Sami Moukaddam and his band will be performing a fusion of soulful jazz and Arab music and Nigel woods, world music DJ will be performing throughout the night.

Ranelagh Arts Festival are delighted to have Henry McCullough back at Ranelagh Arts Festival 2012. Henry is a living legend, the only Irish man to play at Woodstock and with Paul McCartney and Wings, Joe Cocker and The Greaseband, Eire Apparant and Sweeneys Men. Henry will be joined by James Delaney, keyboards, Nollaig Bridgeman, drums, Ed Deane, guitar and John Querney,bass.
